Midwest All Star Racing Series and American Stock Car League Come to MIS This Weekend by John Wells Oregon (WI) This weekend Madison International Speedway will be hosting a double header of action highlighted by the Midwest All Star Racing Series (MARS) on Friday night and the American Stock Car League (ASL) on Saturday night. "It's going to be a big weekend of racing at MIS," said promoter Steve Einhaus. The action gets going on Friday night when the cars from MARS make their first of two appearances at Wisconsin's Fastest Half-Mile. Highlighting the evening will be the Quaker Steak and Lube 100 for the MARS super late models. Also in action will be the Rockweiler Insulation Midwest Truck Series and the Bryden Motors Area Sportsman. A very talented and competitive field of super late models is expected to come to MIS. "I have been getting calls from throughout the midwest," said Einhaus. This race also has implications for the 2005 edition of the Miller Classic coming up on Tuesday, June 28. Drivers who race the Quaker Steak and Lube 100 and also come to the Miller Classic will have the opportunity to earn a provisional for the Classic. "The three highest finishers from the MARS race who fail to qualify for the Classic will have a chance to earn a provisional," added Einhaus. Steve Carlson of West Salem, Wisconsin, is the current point leader. Following Carlson in the points race are Jeff Van Oudenhoven of Kimberly, Wisconsin, Ryan Mathews of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Dean Cornelius of Chaska, Minnesota, and Trevor Stewart of St. Augusta, Minnesota. The series has lost its last two scheduled events due to rain. "We have a great group of drivers who race MIS weekly who are ready for this challenge," said Einhaus. The Rockweiler Insulation Midwest Truck Series and Bryden Motors Area Sportsman will also be in action as part of Quaker Steak and Lube Night. Oregon's Dann Barber holds a twelve point advantage over Vince Wilkinson of Sandwich, Illinois, in the Midwest Truck Series points chase. Mark English of Janesville leads Stoughton's Carey Hensel by thirteen in the Area Sportsman. Qualifying for Friday night's races begins at 6:30 with racing at 8:00 PM. On Saturday night the American Stock Car League (ASL) makes its first-ever appearance in the Badger State. Highlighting the evening will be the Valvoline 150 for the ASL cars. Although the name may be new, many racing fans will recognize this series as the former ASA Touring Series. Einhaus noted, "There will be a lot of well known names including some drivers very familiar with MIS such as Bryan Reffner of Stevens Point, Andrew Morrissey of DeForest and Chad Wood of Madison along with many past ASA stars who have raced at MIS in previous ASA events." Reffner and Morrissey may be the hottest two drivers coming into Madison. Reffner recently captured the Bryden Motors 100 in the ASA Late Model Touring Series at MIS on May 27 while Morrissey won last Friday night's super late model feature at Madison. Reffner maintains a twenty-six point advantage over Jarit Johnson of El Cajon, California. Johnson is the younger brother of Nextel Cup driver Jimmy Johnson. Rounding out the top five are Ryan Mathews of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Trevor Stewart of St. Augusta, Minnesota, and Morrissey. Stephen Leicht of Ashville, North Carolina, won last Wednesday night's feature at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and has already raced at MIS in 2005. Round one of the Mid-Am Super Truck Triple Crown Series will also take place on Saturday night featuring a thirty-lap main event. "Many people have worked very hard to coordinate the rules between the Mid Am Super Trucks and Midwest Truck Series," added Einhaus. Some of the trucks coming to Madison for the Mid-Am Super Truck event are expected to race on Friday night as well. Mark Storlie of Elko, Minnesota, is the current point leader in the Mid-Am Super Trucks. Storlie will face many challenges from drivers in the weekly Rockweiler Insulation Midwest Truck Series along with several drivers coming from Missouri. One new face joining the truck race will be Dan Chesmore of Janesville, a past late model champion at the Jefferson Speedway who will be piloting the truck normally driven by Chris Stocks. The Triple Crown Series will pay a bonus to the drivers who score the highest in the three race series at MIS. The Mid Am Super Trucks will also be here on July 8 and September 2. Practice begins at 3:30 on Saturday with qualifying at 5:00, an on-track autograph session at 6:00, and racing set to begin at 7:00 PM.
