BERGER CAPTURES THE CHECKERED AT ROCKFORD By: Kevin Ramsell Saturday, June 11, 2005 (Loves Park, IL) - A great crowd was on hand to witness the World Famous Trailer Race of Destruction. The crowd also witnessed Matt Berger, George Sparkman, Tom Flippo Jr. and Vern Brown capture feature wins on Kar Korner Night at the Races. Matt Berger missed a few weeks of racing due to a blown motor. But he was able to return tonight and go directly to victory lane. Bob Kahler took the early lead from his outside front row position. Berger followed Kahler by taking over the second spot. On lap 4, Berger got on the inside Kahler to battle for the lead. The first caution came out on lap 8 when Steve DeMarb had something break on his car and he made a hard contact with the turn one wall. DeMarb was able to walk away. On the re-start, Berger got on the inside of Kahler to take over the top spot. While Ricky Bilderback worked from his 10th starting spot and worked his way past Kahler for second. On lap 16, Bilderback looked on the inside of Berger for the top spot. Berger's car was working great on the outside and was able to hold off the defending champion. The final caution flew on lap 26 when Dave Foltz spun in turns one and two. On the re-start, Berger was able to hold off Bilderback all the way to the checkered flag. Jon Reynolds Jr, Bobby Wilberg and Ryan Carlson rounded out the top five. George Sparkman captured his third feature win of the season in the Budweiser American Short Tracker 25-lap feature event. Dave Wagner captured the early lead in the event with Sparkman in second. It didn't take long for Sparkman take over the top spot. On lap 6, he got on the inside of Wagner and the two ran side-by-side for three laps until Sparkman was finally able to get past Wagner for the lead. Wagner then had to battle with Scott Dolliver and Nick Cina Jr for the second spot for the remainder of the race as the three put on a great battle for the position. In the end, it was Cina Jr winning the battle with Wagner in third followed by Dolliver. Jason Evans rounded out the top five. Tom Flippo Jr. captured his first feature win in the Coca Cola RoadRunner feature event. Flippo took the lead from the pole but it wasn't easy as Dave Lignell was looking for a way to get past Flippo for the top spot. With two laps to go, Lignell got on the inside of Flippo. The two went side-by-side down the backstretch. As the two came off turn four, Lignell got loose coming off of four and this allowed Flippo to pull away to his first feature win. Lignell was able to hold on to second. Dan Carlson, Ricky Weimerskirk, and Gene Marocco rounded out the top five. Vern Brown captured the 15-lap FIRA Formula Indy feature event. The best battle in the event was for fourth between Kai McNulty and Jim Bass. The two swiped the position back and fourth throughout the race with McNulty taking the position. Anthony Wallace came home second and Grant Greenfield was third. Chris "Caterpillar" Miller was the sole survivor of the World Famous Trailer Race of Destruction. A total of 20 trailers started the event. On Saturday Night, June 18 is the CRAFTSMAN "Improve Your Home" Night at the Races, as dozens of great prizes will be given away throughout the evening from CRAFTSMAN, Rockford Speedway and NASCAR. Dad and the family will be treated to the great NASCAR action of the Late Models, Budweiser American Short Trackers, Coca-Cola RoadRunners and RoadRunner Challenge. Adult general admission $10, Kids 6-11 $5, 5 & under FREE Then on Sunday June 19, Rockford Speedway and Fox 39 have teamed up for a truly special Father's Day. Starting at 3PM, dads will be able to register for the Taco Bell Taco Eating Contest, Tricycle Races and Sack Races with the winner out of eight contestants in each event will then compete in the final Daring Dads Competition during the racing event that night for their chance to win a BRAND NEW RIDING MOWER! The afternoon will be filled with fun events for everyone including a celebrity Dunk Tank, three legged races, football and basketball contests and more that will fill the afternoon with family fun. Then at 6:06 the Hoosier Outlaw Sprints take over the Speedway as they prove why they are "Jetfighters in a Gymnasium" turning record-breaking speeds. The Hawkeye Downs Modifieds plus the Hornets will also add to this great day of fun and racing. One ticket will admit you to all of Sunday's fun.
