KANKAKEE -- Teddy "the Tornado" Loomis blew through the competition at the Kankakee Valley Motor Speedway Friday (June 3) and racked up another Late Model feature victory. It was a hard-fought battle with Ryan Dauber (who wound up second), but it helped Loomis close the gap on current point leader Frank Heckenast Jr. Loomis, who won the title here last year, has struggled this summer and had to overcome an early race accident to score the win. A damaged car was trying to exit the track as Dauber and Loomis stormed into the same turn. Loomis' car went airborne as it shot over the hood of the other car. The landing seemed to do no damage and Loomis went on to make a solid lowside run to pass Dauber and roll to the winner's circle. Heckenast wound up fourth and retains his hold on the points lead. At 16 (he won't turn 17 until July 19), Heckenast is the youngest Late Model point leader in the nation. In the Open-Wheel Modifieds, Dan Hamstra was unchallenged in his feature win. Teenager Vince Cooper was a solid second, followed by Kevin Hastings. Jay Hamilton won the Street Stock feature after a seven-lap side-by-side battle with runnerup Don McCarty. The Indiana Modifieds made their first appearance at the track and point leader Toby Howard scored the feature win with a come-from-behind effort. He needed some lapper cars to create the opportunity to blast past runner Brad DeYoung with two laps to go. SUMMARIES: Late Model Division Fast Time: Ted Loomis – 14.476 seconds First Heat: 1.
