MONDAY FUNDAY CAPS OFF MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND AT ROCKFORD By: Kevin Ramsell The 2005 Memorial Day weekend ended with racing excitement at the Rockford Speedway with its annual Monday Funday. Dave Lignell had to hold off three other Coca Cola RoadRunners to win his first feature of the year. Joey Thomas took the early lead in the event. Lignell started to work his way to the front from his seventh starting position. With three laps to go, Thomas fell off the pace handing the lead over to Lignell. Lignell held off a strong challenge from Chad Lounsbury, Dan Carlson, and Gene Marocco for the win. Vachenzia Jester took home the overall win in the Winged Women on Wheels division. Jester took home the first WWOW feature by passing Latasha Hillary on the last lap. The two put on a great side-by-side battle until a lap car spun in turn two. Jester snuck by for the win. Alicia Magee started on the outside of the front row and led the entire second 15-lap feature event. Jester started seventh and worked her way to a second place finish and the overall win. Kyle LaPierre took home the top honors in the Legends division. LaPierre started on the front row and took the early lead. He never gave up the lead. The fans were watching Michael Bilderback work his way to the front. With five laps to go, Bilderback was racing side-by-side with Tom Palmo when the two made contact coming out of turn two causing both to spin to the infield. Bilderback would return to finish fifth while Palmo finished seventh. Dwight Dunlap had to work from his fifth starting spot to take home the 12-lap Bandolero feature event. Mick Ellis led from wire-to-wire to take home the 20-lap SuperCup feature event. The win wasn?t easy as Karl Turner put on a last lap charge and almost stole the victory from Ellis. But Ellis was able to hold on by inches. John Zeilinga took home his first feature win in the FIRA Formula Indy 15-lap feature. Zeilinga started on the outside of the front row and led the whole way. Jack Mayberry took home the Figure 8 feature victory. Derek Dobbs took the early lead, until Mayberry got past him halfway through the race. It was his first feature win of the season. Tom Schnabel took the lead from Kenny Osbourne with 3 laps to go capture the Classic Modified feature event. The Hornet Swarm was the final event of the day. Chad Kiefer took home the win with a wild finish to the race. Chad Peavy had the day?s only rollover when he made contact he and Ben Montemayor made contact down the backstretch. Peavy went sideways than did a full barrel roll. Montemayor ended up on top of him. Both were able to walk away. The feature event ran its time limit and Kiefer was declared the winner. Next Saturday night is Parent Petroleum/Turbo Blue Racing Fuel Night at the Races. The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action begins at 7:07 p.m. Full Throttle Wednesdays start on Wednesday, May 8th as SBC Yellow Pages Published by R.H. Donnelly presents Chamber Night at the Races. And mark your calendar for Saturday, June 11th, as the World Famous Trailer Race of Destruction will be part of the racing action that night.
