KANKAKEE, IL – Frankie Heckenast Jr. spent the last day of his junior year at Carl Sandburg High School Friday. Then he went to the Kankakee Valley Motor Speedway and (with help from a flat tire on the John Provanzano car) he became the youngest driver ever to lead the Late Model point standings at this track.< /P> The checkered flag went to Garrett Slager, who made a wire-to-wire feature run on the low side, but the kudos are going to this second-generation driver who ran a strong second and notched enough points to take a step up in the standings. Defending titlist Teddy Loomis was third and Richie Hedrick (who turned the night's quick time) was fourth – just ahead of Frank Heckenast Sr. Did dad imagine that his son would be in the points chase in just his second season? "Honestly, no. Not this fast. I knew he was good. He was real good in go-carts, But this is surprising me," the elder Heckenast said "Heck, he's even teaching me stuff about using the high side." Dave Porth won the Open-Wheel Modified feature with a cool driving style that allowed him to use the second groove on an icy-slick track. William Harrison led in the early going, but Porth perfected his style over the middle 10 laps and slowly moved into control. Anthony Ricketts was a surprising third. Kevin Lenzen won his second feature of the season and moved closer to the lead in the Street Stock points chase. The Kankakee Valley Motor Speedway will introduce Illinois fans to the I-Mod (Indiana Modified) Division at the June 5 racing program.
