KANKAKEE, IL – Veteran John Provanzano showed teenager Frankie Heckenast Jr., that you sometimes have to go a little slower to go faster on a slick track. He scored a Late Model feature victory with a smooth ride in the middle groove at the Kankakee Valley Motor Speedway, leading every lap without a serious challenge from runnerup Heckenast. While Heckenast was powering through the turns on the high side, Provanzano pulled away and wove through lapped traffic with the finesse that comes from having seen just about everything clay track can throw at a driver. Kary Matthews continued his self-improvement program and notched a third, well ahead of fourth-place Garrett Slager, who needed a great last turn to put last week feature winner Ted Loomis behind him – in fifth. Dan Hamstra used similar finesses and the middle groove to score a feature win in the Open-Wheel Modifieds. Kevin Hastings tried racing him out the outside (where he out-ran the Indiana driver in the heat race), and then tried to challenge on the low side – to no avail.
