Haseleu Saves Best for Last in ASA Late Models;
Miller Takes Top Honors in Super Late Models
a talented field of competitors greeted fans at
Madison International Speedway for Verona Night. When
all was said and done, Nate Haseleu, Jeremy Miller,
Carey Hensel, and Jonathon Eilen would be heading home
with the trophies and sending the fans home with
memories of an exciting night of racing.
Arlington’s Nate Haseleu patiently worked his way
through the field of the Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late
Model feature saving his best for last with a final
lap pass of Mineral Point’s Jeff Watters to capture
the victory in the thirty-five lap feature.
Beloit’s Ryan Hanson and Watters paced the field of
twenty- six Weaver Auto Parts ASA Late Models to the
green flag. Watters wasted no time in going to the
front maintaining the lead through several caution
flags. The most notable of the cautions came out on
lap twenty when a multi-car incident in turn four
claimed the top five cars of Winnebago, Illinois’ Tom
Gille and Jesse Saunders of New Glarus.
Watters maintained the lead while Haseleu continued
to gain on Watters and Ryan Carlson of Loves Park,
Illinois. Haseleu moved in past Carlson on lap
thirty-two with Bobby Wilberg in tow. Haseleu pulled
along side Watters on lap thirty-three and took over
the top spot for good on the final lap. Completing
the top five were Watters, Wilberg, Troy Hintzsche of
Malta, Illinois, and Carlson.
Heat races were won by Matt Byrne of Burlington,
Gille, and Chad Wood of Madison. Jared Ziegler of
Madison was the winner in the semi-feature with
Wilberg setting the pace in qualifying with a lap of
18.226 or 98.76 mph.
Jeremy Miller of Rockton, Illinois, picked up the
checkered flag in the forty lap Bryden Motors Super
Late Model feature in only his second night out in a
super late model at MIS. Miller outdistanced a field
of nineteen cars on his way to victory lane. “I’m so
excited I can’t believe it,” said Miller in a post
race interview.
Steve Rubeck of Cherry Valley, Illinois, started on
the pole for the “Verona Night” feature. Rubeck held
down the point for the first five laps until Miller,
who started on the outside of the second row, passed
him for the lead. As Miller tried to check away from
the field, Rubeck and Jeff Storm of Waterford had a
spirited battle for second place. Storm eventually
held off Rubeck with Arlington’s Nate Haseleu closing
quickly on Storm. Miller was able to maintain his
advantage and come home the winner followed by Storm,
Haseleu, Rubeck, and fast qualifier Bobby Wilberg of
Orfordville.
Jim Carlson of LaCrosse and Rubeck were heat winners
with Wilberg setting fast time with a lap of 17.601
(102.27 mph). This was the second week in a row
Wilberg set quick time.
Stoughton’s Carey Hensel made it two in a row in the
Bryden Motors Area Sportsman division winning the
fifteen lap feature. Scott Lawver of Roscoe,
Illinois, grabbed the early lead before the caution
flag came out for a spin. Hensel took over the top
spot and cruised to victory. Following Hensel were
Mark English of Edgerton, Mark Deporter of Fort
Atkinson, Josh Courtney of Janesville, and Cliff Rucks
of Cottage Grove.
The heat winner was Deporter with Hensel setting fast
time with a lap of 20.854 (86.31 mph).
In Round One of the Triple Crown Series for the
Mid-American Stock Car Series it was Jonathon Eilen of
Hampton, Minnesota, coming home the winner in the
thirty lap feature event.
Twenty-three Mid-American Stock Cars took the green
flag with Richfield’s Ron Weyer taking the early lead.
On lap six Somonauk, Illinois’ Jeremy Spoonmore
passed Weyer for the lead with Lake Geneva’s James
Swan right behind. Swan, the 2003Midwest Sportsman
champion at MIS, passed Spoonmore on the ninth lap and
held the top spot until lap twenty-three when Eilen,
who started tenth, took the lead and never looked
back. Swan finished in second place followed by
Spoonmore, Andy Jirik of Lonsdale, Minnesota, and Bill
Prietzel of Franklin.
Gary LaMonte of West Allis set a new track record in
qualifying with a lap of 19.223 (93.64 mph). Heat
winners were Jamie Dorsey of Rockford, Illinois, Tim
Schmitt of Muskego, and Scott Null of Lake Mills.
Wonder Lake, Illinois’ Kenny Joosten won the
semi-feature.
