Bilderback Returns to Victory Lane By: Kevin Ramsell Loves Park, IL (April 30, 2005) - After a week off, the great racing action returned to Rockford Speedway on Family night. It took a few weeks, but defending Track Champion Ricky Bilderback finally found the way to victory lane. Bobby Wilberg started on the pole with Bilderback on the outside. Bilderback grabbed the lead at the start. Wilberg challenged early for the top spot but Bilderback was able to pull away using the top groove. The only caution came on lap18 when Dave Cox spun in turn two. Bilderback led the rest of the way to the checkered flag. Wilberg held on to second. Ryan Carlson came through the pack to finish third. It was a memorable night for Ricky Nielsen. Not only did he win his heat but he also took home his first feature win of the season. Chad Smith took the early lead in the 20-lap Coca-Cola RoadRunner feature event. He held on to the lead until Dan Carlson took over the top spot on lap 2. Carlson held on the lead for three laps until Smith took the lead back. The only caution came on lap 7 when Ricky Weimerskirk spun on the front stretch. Smith held on to the lead at the re-start. Ricky Nielsen worked his way to second with 10 laps to go. With three laps to go, Nielsen got on the inside of Smith to challenge for the lead. Nielsen barely held off Smith at the finish line to take the win. A happy Nielsen was joined in victory lane with a happier Rick Nielsen, lead guitarist of the rock band, Cheap Trick. Don Russell wouldn't give up the lead in the Budweiser American Short Tracker 25-lap feature event. Russell started on the pole with Jason Bragg on the outside. Russell and Bragg put on a great clean side-by-side battle for most of the feature event. The outside line worked very well for Russell, as he was able to hold off Bragg. On the last lap, Bragg made one last shot for the lead as the two touched coming out of turn four. This allowed Bragg to get inside but it wasn?t enough as Russell crossed the finish line first. George Sparkman made the most of his first night of racing by finishing third. Chad Peavey won the first Hornet feature of the season by winning the 13-lap event. Next Saturday is Ladies Night at the Rockford Speedway. All escorted ladies will be admitted free to the racing program that night. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. with the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing program beginning at 7:07 p.m. Plus, the Winged Women on Wheels will be racing that night.
