CARLSON, SPARKMAN AND BREWER SHINE AT ROCKFORD By: Kevin Ramsell Saturday, April 16, 2005 (Loves Park, IL) – It was a close call on Saturday night. With rain threatening in the area, Rockford Speedway was able to complete its full racing program. Ryan Carlson made his first regular Saturday night appearance in the NASCAR Dodge Late Model division, and he made the most of it. Carlson started on the outside of the front row and quickly took the lead at the start over pole sitter Jerry Gille. The fans kept a close eye on Bobby Wilberg and Ricky Bilderback as they moved their way to the front. The first caution flew on lap 6 when Jerry Gille got loose and spun in turn one. Carlson continued to lead at the re-start. Wilberg worked his way to second by lap 8, being closely followed by Bilderback. On lap 10, Wilberg got on the inside of Carlson to challenge for the top spot. Carlson was able to hold off the veteran. On lap 17, Bilderback got into the back of Wilberg in turn four causing Wilberg to spin. Both were sent to the rear of the field. Carlson was able to hold off a late challenge by Matt Berger to capture his first feature win of the season. Jon Reynolds Jr. finished third. B.J. Sparkman had an easy night in the Budweiser American Short Tracker division. Sparkman started on the pole for the 25-lap main event. Sparkman battled side-by-side for the lead with Dave Wagner on the first lap. As the two came off of turn four, it was Sparkman in the lead. Sparkman then moved ahead of Wagner heading down the backstretch on the second lap to take over the lead. After that, it was a Saturday night cruise for Sparkman as he went on to capture his first feature win of the season. Gilbert Brewer used the lap traffic on the last lap to secure his first feature win of the season in the Coca-Cola RoadRunner division. Brewer started on the pole of the 20-lap event. Randy VonHaden took the lead on the first lap, but Brewer didn’t waste any time as he took over the top spot on lap 2. Brewer continued to lead while Billy Robinson worked his way to second. Robinson would challenge for the lead on the last lap. But as Brewer and Robinson went side-by-side into turn three, lap traffic would allow Brewer to get ahead of Robinson and capture the win. Michael Bilderback passed Kyle Lapier on lap 6 to win the 20-lap Legends feature. Kyle Justits led flag to flag to capture the 12-lap Bandolero feature. Jeff Myers passed Nick Ellis with four laps to go to capture the 20-lap Bumper To Bumper Supercup feature event. Next Saturday night, it’s a full racing program with the Allison Legacy cars. All Loves Park residents will receive admission for $5.00. Plus, bring an empty 20 oz. Coca Cola bottle for $2.00 off admission.
