Randy Woodling survived a wild Late Model feature and made a well-deserved trip to the Crown Point Speedway winner's circle Saturday night.
Brett Seivert took the early lead, but gave way to Ryan Dauber's hard inside charge. Dauber ran into mechanical problems shortly after gaining the lead and Seivert was back on top when Shawn Toczak made his move.
Toczak pulled off a smooth slide-job to take the lead, but Seivert dove quickly inside him and they ran side-by-side downt he front stretch -- before Toczak's tires brushed the wall. In a split second his car was fully into the concrete barrier and a tire was off and bouncing toward the infield.
Toczak's car came to rest at the entrance to turn one. No one was injured. Seivert was back in front when the green flag came out again.
As the race wore on, Seivert's car was struggling to hold the upper line in turns one and two. Woodling sized up his chance to pass and moved to the top spot with five laps remaining. Those laps would not be easy.
Sparks flew from the tail of Woodling's car as he battled the same problem that beset Seivert on the high side of the first turn. Meanwhile the low groove was coming in and for the final three laps it was nearly impossible to tell if it was Woodling or low-side challenger TJ Dohlen in the lead.
On the final lap, all three scorers and flagman Jim Whittington agreed that Woodling held the edge -- if only by inches.
In the Open-Wheel Modified feature, Rusty Pleasant took advantage of a bad break that eliminated early leader Dale Lueth (and the track's one-lap record setting number 96) and scared a vistory with an altra-lowside run.
Lueth, who set quick time, was firmlly in control with a lapped car slipped in turn three; made contact with the number 96; and damaged the front suspension on Lueth's car. The race was also marred by numerous other yellow flags.
In a special $2,000 Street Stock feature, Jay Morris surprised the crowd with his first main event win on this track. The 50-lapper was run without a yellow flag.
Jason Bitterling won the Mini-Stock feature.
UPCOMING EVENTS: Track officials announced that the rained-out features from the Friday night show at the Kankakee Motor Speedway would be run here as part of two different shows. On Oct. 16, the postponed $2,000-to-win Late Model feature will be added to a full Late Model program that will be coupled with a 250-lap Enduro program.
On Oct. 23, the delayed Open-Wheel Modified and 50-lap ($2,00-to-win) Street Stock features will be added to a full program already planned for that night. Late Models and Mini-Stocks will also be racing.
