Rei means "holy," "spirit," "mystery," "gift," "nature spirit," "invisible spirit," "universal," "spiritual." Ki means "energy," "nature," "scene," "talent," "feeling." Ki is the Japanese word, chi the Chinese, and prana the Sanskrit. Reiki is a simple yet profound healing art promoting deep relaxation and spiritual unfoldment. As the universal life-force energy, Reiki restores and balances the body in a way that is integral to health, well-being, and aliveness. It is channeled by the practitioner to the recipient by a gentle hands-on technique that facilitates healing on many levels. Many people experience Reiki as unconditional love. Origins Reiki is a Buddhist offspring of Qigong, with Shintoist influences, and can be traced back to ancient Tibetan practices. Reiki was rediscovered at the end of the 19th century by Dr. Mikaomi Usui, a Japanese professor of theology, after a life-long search for this ancient healing wisdom. How Reiki Works Reiki supports and lights the inner consciousness that is present and alive in each of us. It is a holistic relaxation therapy that focuses on the root cause of conditions rather than merely on the symptoms. Its healing flow adjusts to the specific needs of each recipient, thereby promoting the body's natural ability to heal. Because Reiki engages many levels of being-physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual-it balances the body's energies and brings them into equilibrium. Reiki is not attached to any religion or belief system; it is the universal life-force energy that already exists within everyone and everything to some degree. A Reiki attunement, or treatment, amplifies your already existing Reiki and opens your energetic channels to allow a clearer, stronger flow of energy for healing and spiritual purposes. Anyone who desires to may become an accomplished Reiki healer. The benefits of learning Reiki include: Becoming more responsible for your own healing. A handbook is included with the training, and a certificate is awarded at the Reiki Share after each workshop is completed. The Reiki Share is a time to gather and reflect on what you have gained. Please see the class outline for additional information on the material covered at each level. Ongoing support is available to all students, as are opportunities to meet and review issues that arise. A non-refundable $100 deposit is required to reserve your place in the workshop. Class size is limited to 10 students, so please register early. The Attunement A Reiki attunement is a method of transferring Reiki energy to the student through a hands on experience. It opens up energetic pathways that allow a clearer and stronger flow for the Reiki energy. Some people choose to cleanse their body, mind or spirit before the attunement, finding that this enhances the clearing process that Reiki brings about. This is a personal choice and is certainly not required. However, it would be wise not to stay out late the night before the workshop. After your Reiki attunement, you will experience a period of energetic realignment. This will last at least 3 weeks. Allow yourself the space and the time for this realignment as you adjust to the Reiki. You can assist this process by using your Reiki as much as possible: do self-treatments every day, and treat others when the opportunity arises. Make sure you drink plenty of water during the 3-week clearing process, and allow plenty of time for rest as well as Reiki. You may wish to further anchor the experience of renewal that follows a Reiki attunement by consciously revising any practices, habits, or beliefs that no longer serve you. Requirements for Certification You are required to give and receive at least 3 treatments in the 21 days following your attunement. Usually, these are completed as trades with other Reiki students and are arranged during the workshop. It is important to practice giving Reiki sessions and to experience receiving treatments from other people. Reiki II students are also given a symbol test just prior to the Reiki Share. (For Reiki III, please see the requirements listed under "Reiki Master Certification.") The Reiki Share is open to everyone, and you are encouraged to bring along anyone who is interested in the Reiki experience. California Bay Area workshops take place at my house in downtown Berkeley, only a few blocks from the BART station. We will meet at precisely the starting time of the workshop. Please be on time. A notebook. Cost Reiki I - beginning level: $154-$208 (sliding scale) Reiki II - advanced level: $154-$254 (sliding scale) Reiki Master - master level: $500-$777 (sliding scale) The Reiki Master Program is an apprenticeship, which includes assisting me with workshops as well as regular meetings. Reiki is traditionally taught at three levels: Reiki I, Reiki II, and Reiki Master. After completing Reiki I, you will intrinsically know when you're ready to go on to the next level. I generally recommend a minimum of 21 days before you begin the next level.
