Posted by Chris Page on 10/12/2002, 5:37 pm United Utilities hope to erect 30 wind turbines 400 feet tall. For each turbine there will be concrete foundations using 40,000 tonnes of concrete. Thats 1.2 million tonnes of concrete being dropped off Rest Bay. Aesthetically this will have a detrimental impact on the coastline as it will be visible from Porthcawl, Port Talbot, Swansea and the Gower and even from Devon. We must act now to stop this before our coastline is ruined forever. No one knows the impact the turbines will have on the local coastline. A wind farm has never been built off a surf beach before and it could form an artificial reef and destroy the surf at Rest Bay. It could drag all the sand from our beaches or dump more on them...no one knows! It will have a huge affect on tourism (Porthcawl's key industry), a study in Denmark showed a 40% decline in tourism following construction of a wind farm. During construction likely to be 12-24 months it is likely to create pollution which could mean the loss of our Blue Flag. During the test drilling phase at the start of summer 2002 a large amount of oil was washed up on the beach which was probably more than just a coincidence! Visit www.sosporthcawl.com for more information. Help prevent the windfarm before it is too late!

If you are not aware an offshore wind farm is planned to be located on scarweather sands, about 2/3 miles off the coast of Rest Bay, Porthcawl. This has strong support from the National Assembly who will be making the final decision about whether it gets the go ahead.
