Holly,
I was also diagnosed in June. I had a 2.5 cm tumor, a 5mm tumor, and a 9.4cm undifferentiated mass all in my right breast. I am HER2+++ and I am also adopted. Because of the size of the mass and tumors, there would not have been much tissue left for recon. Because of the HER2 and my unknown family history I opted for bilateral mastectomy.
Plastic surgeon advised also, as Robin stated, that I would have better symmetry. (I was a 38DD, so I would have been pretty lopsided!!) PS also advised thaqt I have delayed recon to let myself heal, deal, and be better equipped to handle the rigors of chemo.
I made the decision to have prophylactic mast on "good" breast because of the above reasons and because I never wanted to hear the words "I'm sorry, your biopsy came back positive for an invasive carcinoma" ever again.
It is a difficult and personal decision to make. I am comfortable with my decision. Good luck to you.
Hugs,
Tina
