There are a lot of people on these sites who totally disagree with me, but I would do as your doctor recommends if I were you. I had a bilateral mastectomy in July of 2007 and I am so glad that I did, for 2 reasons. 1. I did not want to just "wait" for cancer to show up on the other side. 2. It gives the plastic surgeon a better chance for symetry when he can reconstruct both breasts at the same time. I have read so many posts here where cancer has shown up in the "healthy" breast and women have had to go through the surgery all over again and really wish they had done a bilat mast in the first place. I know that there is still a chance that I could get breast cancer again, maybe from a cell or 2 that were missed during surgery and pop up later as breast cancer on the chest wall, but for me, I feel I gave myself the best shot at not having to deal with it again. I hope this helps. You should post this question on the surgery/recon board, as you may get more input there. Good luck to you in making the best decision for you.
