...for pulmonary embolism. It prevents the formation of new blood clots. Side-effects vary but can include: bruising because platelet count gets too low; fever, and local irritation at injection site (bruising is common there). With this in mind, an electric razor should be used instead of razor, and a soft toothbrush will cause less trauma to the gums when brushing teeth. There is also a risk of increased bleeding tendencies if you take aspirin, motrin, penicillin at the same time. Always monitor all stool, urine, and sputum for blood. Report at once, as the lovenox dose may need to be adjusted and protamine sulfate administered. It is important to stop smoking at this time as nicotine contricts the vessels. There is also an increased risk of bleeding tendencies if combined with chamomile, garlic, ginger, ginko, ginseng and vitamin E.
Keep in mind, that the blood clot in the lung, if left intreated, will block the blood flow to that area of the lung and the tissue there will die. The Lovenox is used to help dissolve this clot before there is any compromise in both the heart and lung. Also, if the blood clots are recurrent, there is a flilter device that can be surgically placed in the inferior vena cava. Sorry if I am rambling, was up very late last night. Best Regards, ~Lady Di
