Wow, I am so glad to hear that you are stable and things seem under control now. I went to the website to check out the information on the clinical trial you are on, I'm going to print it out and present it to mom's doctor in 3 weeks and see what she says. Unfortunately getting a second opinion in canada is not an option, we were fortunate that we got a different Onc when mom moved to London, but unless she moved again she couldn't be referred to someone else. The oncologist she had before didn't even think it was necessary to scan her and when she found a lump in her clavicle Feb 2007, they radiated it but never suggested chemo or scans to see if it was anywhere else, and called her a stage III and said not to worry.
I'm glad you were forceful in getting the fluid tested, that is how we knew mom's cancer was back. She was only cancer free (or perhaps symptom free) for 4 years before finding the lump in her clavicle and then 4 1/2 until it recurred in the lungs.
I guess I'm not clear as to why they want to hold off using the Xeloda. I can't help but think that that was the drug that worked to shrink things. The doctor agrees that that is likely and that seems to be why they want to wait and use it when it becomes necessary.
So do you still have the 4 brain mets or are they gone now too, how about your lungs, do you feel okay or do you get short of breath. My mom is not "her normal active self", she is short of breath climbing 1 flight of stairs and can't take long walks like she used to, yet the dr doesn't think she is symptomatic. She only has 2/3 of one of her lungs as the rest is under fluid and yet they think that is okay. I am a nurse, but not in this field of oncology, I am an RN on the maternity ward and I know how you have to fight sometimes for what you want, I'm just so grateful for this support network to find out what I can help mom fight for.
Thanks again for your response.
Deanna
