My niece underwent whole brain irradiation for her brain mets last month. After five days, she had no CNS involvement and was back to work the following week. As with all cancer cells, radiation can initially cause the cancer cells to swell a bit before actually shrinking. If the tumor cells are close to the brain stem, the autonomic nervous system can be affected with this initial swelling. With close supervision throughout, there are meds to counteract these possible temporary side-effects. Her six tumors are no longer visible on followup scans and I wish you only the best results in whichever treatment you elect. Please keep us posted on your progress. Love, Di
