Apparently this issue happens frequently enough that some hospital suppliers make a wipe for people to use the night before surgery. According to a friend of mine, it was developed by someone who got a staph infection after surgery. I don't think the wipes are available to the public, but it wouldn't hurt to clean the area up really good the night before surgery next time, even though they will also clean you before the procedure.
