Hi Laurie,
I had bilateral mastectomy with Immediate latissimus dorsi recon. This is a major surgery which required about 6 weeks of down time. I didn't know this. I had to lie flat on my back for at least 2-4 weeks for fear of bleeding. I had month of PT to get range of motion and having done Pilates for years, was surprised that I couldn't feel my lats. It took many sessions and time for me to be able to feel my lats and I eventually went from PT into novice Pilates. I am fine now, with the exception of another surgery in Sept. to fine turn my reconstruction. To be honest, the scars on my back are about 6" long. Because there is no fat on my back and because my bra crosses over the scars, wearing a bra is very uncomfortable. Taking it off is the first thing I do when I get home. The scars do leave an indentation but most clothes and my bathing suit cover my back scars. The drains left indentations in my back and side. You should watch this video on YouTube about drains http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvMgjBtGsOc If you have any more questions, let me know. Best of luck to you and your recovery.
