The only experience I can share is that I do currently use a prothesises since having the expander removed due to infection. Thank goodness there are prothesises for us to use. However for myself it would be alot better trying to achieve a more "normal" appearance, as they can be quite inconvenient.
So sorry to hear that you've had such a bad run of it. If there's anything positive to think about it's the fact that the implant replacement surgery isn't nearly as invasive as the previous and your healing time should be quick. Make sure your careful about the infection possibilites, I'm so nervous now about that now... will certainly be insisting on going home with antibiotics when I get the next surgery done.
