Getting a consultation with a plastic surgeon is the first thing to do.
I waited 7 years myself. Just had my expander replaced with a silicone implant Friday Februrary 27th 2009.
I started with a tissue expander under radiated skin last January. I knew that radiated skin can pose some risks. It ruptured in March during a fill.
In April I switched to a lat flap, they take muscle and skin from your upper back, feed it under the skin and around the front to form a breast mound. The front scar looks like the shape of an eye, and the back for me runs from under the arm to the middle of my back.
For me the lat flap wasn't enough so an expander was put in also. My PS decided to take it slow and I was done with the expansions in late November. The PS will usually wait 8 weeks after the last fill before scheduling the exchange. This gives the skin a chance to relax.
The surgery for the exchange took about two hours and it was done as an out patient. Also, the orginal expander was done as an out patient.
The fills are usually done weekly or bi-weekly depending on the condition of your skin.
All of the ladies here who have had the lat flap are extremely happy with it.
I will be planning a final surgery to lift and tuck my good side in the next several months.
This surgery can require one over night stay.
I know I will definately have my nipple done because I feel I have come this far I might as do it completely. This is a personal choice.
Good Luck
