I was diagnosed at age 45 and wanted immediate recon but due to impending radiation I was advised against it at that time. I turned 50 two years ago and also lost my long time job. Last December I decided to see a plastic surgeon and find out my options.
I was doing this completely for me. No one was influencing me. Not my husband or my daughters. I just felt it would help me get back to the old me. I didn't want to fool around with the mastecomy bras and all that it intailed.
I started recon in January and had a set back with the expander and radiated skin. I choose the lat flap with expander and I am currently undergoing weekly fills. I will have my implant in by Christmas and I can't wait.
Sue was very helpful in relaying her story as well as many of the other ladies here.
Weigh all of your options for recon and make an informed choice. Get a second opinion if you want. I am so glad I choose to go ahead with recon. I wish I had done it sooner. But I guess that now was the right time for me.
More and more oncologists and breast surgeons are recommending recon for there breast cancer patients. It is something that should be discussed.
Good Luck with your decision.
