After my lumpectomy and axillary nose dissection, I had a baseline assessment by a certified lymphadema therapist. This person is an occupational therapist with advanced certification as a lymphadema therapist. It is very important to be seen by one with these credentials. She took measurements of both arms, counseled on manual massage to lessen lymph (fluid) build up) and measured me for a compression sleeve and glove to be worn during air travel.
I do not have lymphadema but recheck with the LE therapist once a year for repeat measurement....use common sense re tugging, heavy lifting...and then really don't think about it. It is really being proactive and informed and all docs should be promoting this. Incidentally my insurance covered the cost for the LE services. Good luck with all of this.
Take care,
Peg
