Well the coaching Merry-go-Round has begun, and the football season is not over, yet! Dan Reeves was fired yesterday as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. I had predicted weeks ago that Reeves would be one of many NFL coaches to be out of work at the end of the season, but not this soon. Apparently, Reeves was told yesterday by the Falcons GM that he would be fired at the end of the season, but he wanted Reeves to finish out the year and go out gracefully. How can you go out gracefully when you know that you will be fired after your last game is played? This firing is not Reeves fault. The fact that QB Mike (don't call him Michael) Vick, broke his leg in pre-season is not Reeves fault. The fact that his star running back of a year ago has not produced is not Reeves fault, but the wins and losses always come down to the coach. Dan Reeves is a good guy and a good coach, he just did not have enough talent in Atlanta to win. A coach is only as good as his talent. Reeves however, won't be alone this offseason. I predict that there will be about 6-8 openings in the NFL. I think that both New York coaches will go, along with Oakland, San Diego, Washington, New Orleans, Arizona, and Miami if Dave Wanstedt doesn't win and make the playoffs. It looked like at the beginning of the season that Andy Reid may be out in Philly after an 0-2 start. The Eagles not only saved his job, but they are in position to win home field advantage with wins in 2 of their last 3 games. I hope that Dan Reeves lands a new job next season, maybe with my Raiders. Certainly after this disaster, Bill Callahan will be shown the door. Not because I want that, but because he called his players dumb, has had constant clashes with several players, and he is 3-10 after going to the Super Bowl last season. How many more opportunities will Marty Schottenheimer get? He has failed in Kansas City, Washington and now San Diego. So will any other team hire him? Even Mike Sherman in Green Bay may be out if the Packers fail to make the post season. What a life, coaching in the National Football League. One minute you are on top of the world, the next you begin to slip, then you bottom out and get fired. But somewhere along the line, another team will look at your coaching history and give you another chance. If Bill Parcels lives to be 150 years old, he will probably have coached all 32 teams in the NFL! Too bad for Dan Reeves, he deserves better. And I'm sure as soon as the season ends, several teams will be knocking at his door. Not so sure about some of the others who will soon join him on the unemployment line!
