Those in charge of the BCS are breathing a sigh of relief, somewhat, this morning, thanks to Southern Mississippi. They beat TCU last night, knocking the Hornfrogs from the unbeaten ranks, and shattering any hopes of TCU getting into a BCS bowl. Thus leaving Oklahoma the lone unbeaten team in America. Now the only thing that will further complicate this already screwed up system is if Oklahoma loses before January. If they remain undefeated, then the BCS lords will have to deflect the firestorm about the number 2 team, right now Ohio State. But if the Sooners tumble, then it will be all messed up in terms of who will play in the Sugar Bowl. I hope the Sooners lose, so the BCS eggheads have to pick two teams from a list of schools that will all say they deserve to play for the championship.. Then who makes it? If Ohio State loses to Michigan tomorrow, and USC somehow loses to UCLA and so on, what happens then? I have no sympathy for these goofs who devised this system. There is a wonderful opportunity to have a playoff system which will generate tons of money, since that is the only thing most seem to be interested in these days. Let the teams play it out on the field for the championship. And no, they don't do that now. Only the two teams that are chosen to play in the title game get to play it out, while the others have to settle for second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth place! Get rid of the BCS and institute a playoff that would not only generate money, but a little more excitement than just waiting to see who gets selected to play for the top prize.
The BCS was created to eliminate the hassle of choosing from the polls, but it has created more of a problem than it is worth. With so many formulas and criteria built in, many schools are out because they are not in one of the BCS conferences, or they get into the top 10 in the polls, only to be shunned because they play a weak schedule, or the conference they are in has a lot of weak teams, so it really doesn't matter where you play, it's who you play and how good are those teams that you play!! Either way the system is flawed, and until there is a bonified playoff, college football will continue to be a joke as far as picking its national champion, which is what is done. Just look at March Madness. It is not a perfect tournament, but at least they play it out over three weeks on the court and not in the computer room!
