I really can't stand writing or talking about the NBA simply because I have absoultely no interest in the league or any of its players. Dallas owner Mark Cuban suggested this past summer that the Kobe Bryant rape trial would actually be good for the league in terms of its marketability. Let one of his daughters get raped, and see how much marketing he would care to do!! Kobe is facing life in prison for allegedly raping a 19 year old woman, just months after his wife gave birth to their first child. The lack of offensive talent in this league is painful, there have already been several games where teams have scored all the way into the 60's. If I were to go to a game, and I probably never will, I would seriously ask for my money back. I can see high school teams score 60 points in a game, for a lot less in terms of ticket prices. And now, the NBA is pinning all of its publicity on two teenagers, both of whom are not allowed to drink in many states. ESPN blew the first ever meeting in the pros between LeBron James of Cleveland and Carmelo Anthony of Denver out or proportaion, as the second coming. They hyped this like it was the old rivalries of Bird and Magic, Russel and Chamberlain, and quite frankly, it isn't. Chances are, both James and Anthony might not even know about Russel and Chamberlain because according to kids logic today, those guys would be considered ancient history. How bad is it for the NBA when the league has to put all of its hopes on two teenagers to bring the league publicity and notariety? TV ratings suck, I have said that many times over in the past. And I will bet you that if you went out and sampled at least 100 sports fans, less than half of them could tell you who won the NBA champiionship last year. Do you know? Think about it for a few seconds!! The NBA would have had a story to follow in the Lakers with the additions of Gary Peyton and Karl Malone. But the Kobe trial has put a damper on that one. And there is really no other story worth following in this league. Their image is weak, thanks to all of the criminal acts that seem to follow its big stars, or when two teammates resort to name calling in the media, and most importantly, when teams score just 60 points in a 48 minute game. These guys are supposedly the best athletes in the world. If so, how come they can't score 100 points or more each night? And don't tell me that it's defense that is the reason for low scoring teams. The reason is a lack of legitimate talent on the floor. As for who won the championship this past summer...it was the Spurs. Did you know that? Or better yet, do you really care??
