Well, the football season is in the final month for colleges, at the halfway point for the NFL, into playoffs for high school, so it's time for me to sit here and tell you what I think so far. How the mighty have fallen. The Bucs and Raiders, last January's Super Bowl teams are a combined 6-10 this season. How can this happen? Easy, the Raiders are old and slow, and Tampa was a flash in the pan. Look for two new teams in the Super Bowl this coming February (1). The Steelers are just lousy. The Dec. 7 game in Pittsburgh was looking great before the season started, now folks will probably be giving tickets away. Maybe I can score a couple and go see my Raiders despite their horrible season. To make a Super Bowl prediction now, no way. I would stand a better chance of picking the winning powerball numbers before Christmas. In college football, it looks like Oklahoma will coast into the BCS championship game unless they beat themselves. The only question is which team will be their opponent? It's a tossup right now, but look for USC to remain number 2 and play the Sooners in January. How about Penn St and Note Dame? Who would have ever dreamed that these two would both be looking at 2-10 seasons in the same year? With all of the focus this year on how bad the Nittany Lions are, Pitt is having a successful season, but no one is noticing. The Panthers could get to a pretty good bowl game, if they can run the table, but that includes games against Miami and Virginia Tech. Both of those are at home, so the Panthers have a shot at winning both of those games. In high school football, Blair County still has 4 teams in search of District titles. Cambria County has 5 teams alive for post season gold, and there are some dandy games set for this coming weekend. BG will get a long awaited shot at Bishop Carroll, which has garnered statewide attention with their program in the past 5 seasons. The Huskies are up there again, but don't count BG out. Thier defense is quick, and can get to the ball in a hurry. Carroll is strong in all aspects of the game, and BG will have to control the ball for a majority of the game in order to have a chance. I look for Altoona and State College to win this week, along with Huntingdon in the AAA title game against Johnstown. It should be Tyrone-Forest Hills in the AA title game next week, and with my heart I will pick BG to upset Carroll, but conventional wisdom tells me that the Huskies may be a bit too strong for the Marauders, but you never know how the ball is going to bounce. Saying all of that, I think Carroll will meet Northern Cambria in the final next week. Just some observations on football!!
