Posted by Vipers Strike! on 3/23/2002, 9:23 pm #5 Kelly Snell at 5-9 185, playing Defensive Specialist, will probably be one of the Vipers' better players. He locked down his man all game & when his man did catch a pass, he made him pay as he is a ferocious headhunter. He had some big-time hits. He's as good a cover man as the Vipers have ever had. #20 Kenny Bailey, 5-11 200, playing one of the corners, was impressive as well as he had the hit of the game. Coach Guy bragged on these 2 guys & he's right. These 2 can flat out play. The QB starter is up on the air as 4 guys split time, but it appeared to me that #8 Wes Counts, 6-1 195, looked the best. He's kind of a smaller-looking Matt Sauk - nice strong accurate arm. #11 Tracy Kendall, 6-0 200, seemed to be number 2. #12 Jason Barnett, 6-3 230, seemed to be number 3. #16 Jeremy Clements, 6-1 200, seemed to be number 4. The WR position looks real plentiful this season, unlike the last 2 seasons. Of course, Mr. Reliable #15 Kelly "Layout" Fields, 5-11 185, with the best hands, routes, & most receiving yards in AF2, will be the starter at OS. #9 Ronald Bonner, 6-2 210, will have a tough time keeping his starting position at WR/LB from the last 2 years as #7 Ed Howard, 6-4 210, looked very impressive. He's the tallest WR in the AF2 that I've ever seen. #2 Pat House, 6-0 205, will also have it tough keeping his starting position at WR/DB as #24 Torey Day, 6-0 190, has got to be the fastest guy on the team. He was running plenty of toss sweeps & running them well. #44 Derek Fuqua, 6-1 235, playing LB, registered a nasty-looking safety on the Columbus QB. But the playmaker of the day was #69 Curtis Jeter, 6-0 290. We'll have to start calling him "Slash" now. He's got 2 new postions in addition to playing the noseguard spot. He's now playing fullback & linebacker. He had 1 rushing TD & several other nice runs on 3rd & short picking up 1st downs. He also had several sacks including a safety. He will be all-AF2 again. The Vipers' overall pass rush was awesome. Overall, the defense is without question the Vipers' strong-point. They dominated the scrimmage. The Vipers' only weakness appeared to be pass protection as the Vipers' QBs didn't have very long to throw. But give credit to Columbus' pass rush. They were Columbus' only strong-point. If the Vipers' O-Line can give the QBs time to throw, this could be the best team to ever wear the green & silver.
The Vipers were very impressive in the scrimmage against Columbus winning 32-9. The Vipers even turned it over 4 times (2 interceptions & 2 fumbles) while Columbus was without a turnover. The Vipers will have to get a handle on turnovers if they expect to win the close ones.
