Posted by The_Deuce on 7/19/2001, 4:37 am "Wheelers arrogance might get upcoming opponents steamed" Its all about a special playoff package for the teams season ticket holders and a series of extra prizes the fans can win in a drawing. The release is 314 words long. There is one word missing: If. The release pretty much anoints the Steamwheelers the champions of arenafootball2 for the second year in a row. No ifs. No ands. No buts. As a result, the Wheelers will be lucky if they dont get their butts beaten somewhere along the line in the af2 playoffs. Hey, we know theyre the best team in the league. Again. We know theyve already clinched home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Again. We know they figure to rampage to the title in dominating fashion. Again. But they need to at least show some public pretense that the other franchises have a chance. They need to at least act as though this isnt pre-determined. This press release reeks with the sort of cocksure, weve-got-it-made arrogance thats going to raise the intensity level of whoever the Wheelers face July 28 in the opening round of the playoffs. At the very least, its bound to expand the get-the-Wheelers mentality that undoubtedly already pervades af2. The gist of the press release is that Steamwheeler fans can buy a playoff package that includes three games. Right away, there is an assumption that the Wheelers will play three games, thereby advancing to the championship game. Anyone who buys the playoff package will be eligible for a drawing for more goodies, including: A Steamwheelers ArenaCup 2001 championship ring. A VIP guest invitation to the af2 All-League Gala Awards Banquet Aug. 9 in the Quad-Cities. A chance to join the Steamwheelers on the field after the championship game for the awards presentation. An official af2 game ball autographed by the 2001 champion Steamwheelers. A chance to visit the victorious Steamwheelers in the locker room after the ArenaCup game. Victorious Steamwheelers? The 2001 champion Steamwheelers? Its as though its all been decided already. Its presumptuous, audacious, brash, bold. It may or may not be good public relations, but its absolutely awful league relations. If Im the coach of an upcoming opponent, a copy of this release ends up in the locker of every one of my players. Look, these guys think they have it made already. Theyve already anointed themselves the champions again. Dont get us wrong. We suspect it all will happen just the way the Wheelers promotional people have it planned. The Wheelers will win the first two playoff games. They will host the championship game at The Mark on Aug. 10 and the all-league banquet the night before. They will win the big game, receive the big trophy, celebrate in the locker room and get measured for those championship rings. But you need to at least acknowledge the remote possibility that the ArenaCup championship game could match the Tulsa Talons against the Tennessee Valley Vipers. You need to have the word if in there somewhere. If the Steamwheelers make it to the championship game. If they win the title again. Because if it doesnt happen, we know a certain franchise that will have one heckuva lot of egg on its face If you know what we mean.
Yeah i put this on the booster club web site too,but anyway look at what QC has in store for all the fans after they win the championship...LOL!!!
