It was the holiday season of 1986, and I had road-tripped to see my family from my new home in northwest FL. My cousin Annette had a small off-campus apartment from which she attended local university, and it was there that we had a small holiday gathering on Dec 26th.
I arrived rather early to help with preparations & such. We had to go by the grocery store, of course, and after leaving there she remembered that her friend Michelle's car was in the shop , so we rode by there to see if she would like to join us (this was the mid-eighties; cellphones hadn't entered popular use).
Michelle was indeed interested in joining us, so we headed back to Annette's apartment. On the way back, we made a last-minute stop at the nearest convenience store so Michelle could get cigarettes & beer.
Have I mentioned that Michelle was a knockout? About 5'3", 110 lbs, wavy auburn hair past the shoulders. Bedroom eyes. Man, those eyes. At this point I was thinking, "No way it's gonna happen, dude, so just enjoy the party."
Back to the party we went, and enjoy the party I did. But Michelle was the type of lady that could not be ignored. I tried my level best to be cool & nonchalant, but still caught myself stealing glances at her quite often. She caught me in the act of this on several occasions, and smiled every time. Man, that smile.
It began to get quite late, and people were making their goodbyes & going about their way. Michelle, of course, had no way home as her car was in the shop. Annette was quite drunk (as were we all) & in no shape to drive, but Michelle was almost out of cigarettes. This petite beauty had gone through an entire pack of VS Menthol Lights in about 4 hours. Ever the gentleman, I offered a ride to the store as I was nearly out of smokes myself. Luckily it wasn't far.
We returned to a deserted apartment. All guests were gone, and our hostess retired to bed. Michelle & I enjoyed a quiet drink while chatting merrily about nothing at all, then she looked directly into my eyes & said, "I need a back massage. Do you mind?"
I didn't mind a bit, and one thing led to another. It was a great night, and 25 years later I still wait for the lightning to strike a second time. Man, those eyes.
