She called me Thursday evening and said she didn’t want to lead me on, that she had a boyfriend in the military, currently stationed abroad, and they have been apart for three and a half months. She said she struggles with her loneliness and implied that we meant during a period when she felt vulnerable the other day, perhaps she flirted more than she should have. She’s not interested in pursuing a romantic relationship. I felt let down but I was impressed with her honesty. She said that “dinner and a movie” sounded too much like a date, and she felt she should cancel. I told her I understood, which is true to some extent, I’m struggling with my loneliness right now, too. But I don’t have a lover on the back-burner like she does. I told her that, yes, I was clearly attracted to her, but that I could limit myself to a casual relationship if she just wanted to be friends. I’m between relationships and I miss the companionship of a woman, not just the sex, so it’s true. Part of me hopes it will become intimate but it might be awesome to have an attractive woman smoker as a platonic friend; after all, she’s going to have girlfriends and that’s opportunities. Secondly, I love watching her smoke. She’s really uninhibited and good at it. It’s my hangup, my fetish, but I’m aroused by a hardened woman smoker I find pleasant on the eyes. She doesn’t have to know that.
So I suggested that we have a drink and a casual dinner instead. She agree as long as we split the bill: no problem here. We went to a restaurant where they serve dinner in the bar, so we could smoke, and she thought that was great.
I really had a good time under the circumstances. She talked about herself almost the whole time, she liked that. I’ll settle for being her “best girlfriend” at this point, which is pretty good, and maybe it’ll become more than that with time. I want to find out everything about her smoking before I’m through; all I know at this point is that she started as a teenager and she smokes two packs a day on her days off, a half pack less on workdays.
