Who would have thought she smoked?
Posted by Usually Lurks on June 30, 2007, 13:19:08 Mainly, though, she's a chain smoker, lighting the next one up as soon as the last one is out! Brand uncertain-- all-white 100s kept in a pouch. On just a couple occasions I've seen her use a short white holder (but using it with some, not all, of her five or six cigarettes during less than 1 hr stay). Not long ago, I happened to notice her a few tables away and the style she exhibited was one of those things I can't remember having seen. She was listening to her (nonsmoking) female friend who must have been telling a long story. All the time, a couple minutes I guess, she held her cigarette an inch from her face, reaching out with her lips for constant small, gentle drags-- drag-inhale-exhale, drag-inhale-exhale without pause (maybe not even to breath) like TWELVE times. It was so obvious to me that this was the totally unconscious, totally natural smoking style of a lady whose need for tobacco dated back a half century. And she made it look positively serene and elegant.

Because I eat lunch fairly frequently in the same smoking section, recurring sightings are the rule. One lady I've seen a number of times is incomparably elegant in ways I rarely see anymore. I'd guess she's 60-65, blond (for sure with some help) with her hair up in a french twist, dressed, made-up, and jeweleried to the very nines, and all with impeccable taste. She carries her age beautifully, although nobody would guess her to be younger than she (probably) is. She would've been an absolute knockout at 20, 30, and 40. Still very pretty today.
