This is an older sighting but I thought I'd post it again. A fast-food restaurant I frequented had a smoking section and I always sat there even though I don't smoke. On one occasion an apparent mother and daughter were already in place when I sat down. They had money written all over them. Mom was in a business suit and the girl (she was at least sixteen as I would later see her drive) was wearing the uniform of a very prestigious local private high school. She was not glamorous and if I had to describe her I'd have said she looked more like the secretary of the library club than the captain of the cheerleaders. Wire rimmed glasses, very bookish. As they finished their food, mom reached into her purse and took out a pack of More Menthol 120's, placed one to her lips and lit it. She sipped firmly on it and then did something that got my attention. She offered her daughter a cigarette! The girl shook her head no, reached into the pocket of her school blazer and took out a pack of Newport 100's. Good heavens. She flipped up the top, extracted a cigarette, placed the cork filter between her lips at which point mom flicked her lighter and lit her daughter's cigarette. The girl's cheeks caved in and the tip of the Newport glowed for what seemed like a full five seconds. This was followed by a deep inhale, keeping the smoke in her lungs for what seemed like another five seconds then a beautiful plume exhale done with her head tilted slightly back. This girl did not start smoking last week. She repeated her drag/hold/exhale sequence several times, held the cigarette between her lips while she read a sheet of paper her mother had handed her and did some talking exhales in conversation with her mother and in a cell phone call with her father ("Hi dad. Oh, just sitting and smoking with Mom"). Mom was no slouch in smoking her More, taking very hard drags and doing some hands free smoking also. As they put their cigarettes out I thought it was the end of the show but Mom lit another More and teasingly waved the pack in her daughter's direction. This time she took one and Mom again did the light-up. This beautifully plain girl held the More between her lips as she gathered her food wrappers, placed them on her tray and walked to the trash can. She did hot touch the cigarette with her fingers until she and her mom reached their car, one of those Mercedes two-seat convertibles. Then, she just tapped the ash off and returned the More to her lips as she accepted the car keys from her mother, got into the driver's seat, fastened the seat belt and drove away. I don't know if anyone will agree but I thought it was a very nice sighting. Comments are welcome. Also, I hooked on a link to our group where Gwen and I have some fantasy magazine ads posted.
