Who would have thought she smoked?
Posted by Randall on March 2, 2006, 17:44:02, in reply to "Lucky Strikes" I think that sometimes, self-defined "underground" subcultures adpot brands for no other reason than to be different. "Everyone" smoked Marlboros Lights? Fine, we'll smoke the anti-Marlboros ... Camels! I expect that Lucky Strikes may have the same appeal. Sort of working-class, masculine, unsophsticated. So, what fun for us smart, artsy, "alternative" people to adopt them. Very ironic. Very postmodern.

I always wondered the same sort of thing that happend for awhile with Camels, back in the late '80s and early '90s. For awhile (at least here in the US), Camels were the fashionable cigarette for artsy / bohemian types. And even though it was legal to advertise in print, the Camel ads never really seemed to be aimed at that crowd.
