I'm so glad they didn't/couldn't lock up Gil Meche. Him and Lilly are both basically career-.500 stiffs and, despite being lefties, are replaceable via avenues other than those costing $10 million/year. Both were true Moneyball non-signings--accidental or otherwise--c/o OG Billy Beane Protege JP.
Pitching market is beyond whack this year, as teams have finally figured out that it's the hardest asset to come by and so should be the first thing that gets locked up long term*. As I see it, if there aren't any arms to sign, don't sign any arms. The trade route looks much more promising ie. Rios for Brad Penny--that's some shi.t I could live with.
