Please take an extra moment here to fully consider what this must have looked and sounded like. -Better Than You isn't buried in mid-set as I had feared, but busted out in the coveted 3-slot. For a comp track (even if the comp is TWII), that's the goddamn red-carpet treatment. -Wally, looking a little worse for wear but not that bad, is indie-stomping all over the place--as solly surely will be at mbu reunion 2017--and singing along to every word and wearing his precious little ironicape for a song or two; meanwhile, here's good ol' AAAALEX! over on stage right looking IDENTICAL to how he did in your fave sbs vid...and just as 'energetic', too. Where did a robot made of wood like this guy summon the inspiration and wherewithal to start Skiz zine?? By now, Porcell's douchiness is a matter of public record, so Al had to be the brains behind it. It just doesn't add up. -the crowd was definitely beb-heavy but the older dudes who were there all had the best attitude. You'd walk around the spot, shake hands with a head you knew and and chit-chat with him about how jazzed on the event the two of you were. Earnestness was completely off the charts, which is bad news if it's happening every night, but how else do you want to act at a yc fantasy camp like a gb reunion? -As One got covered, as it often does, and it was the pit instigator it always is. -Murphy's Law played secret agent skin and panty raid as soon as I got there, went into some other weird stuff, and then wrapped it up. I guess I missed the We Gotta Know intro and Beer Song-into-Straight edge. The truth is they kind of blew but Jimmy G is more worth paying money to see than any stand up comedian working today. And that's true even when he's not really saying anything, which was the case last night. -Jay-hu was there, 90 lbs. lighter and moshing all night. Like come on, that's just good stuff. Again, this isn't what you want to be looking at every time you leave your house, but it's a far f.ucking cry from dudes rodeoing at a darkest gig. -The best song of the night was Stand Still. Big chants, big dives, the flood-light dude even got involved....it just all came together for that tune. I have to leave now, but I'll post more if it looks like anyone read this.
I'm not out to cluck my tongue at those who chose not to attend, or to suggest that they missed the best shi.t ever, but this was was a legit great night. Even the most wary and nostalgia-averse of the I-can't-be-a-kid-forever futurist set were up on the four foot stage doing dives like they meant it.
"This IS f.uckin' Colorado!"
