happy new person
I listened to the bells
of the C of E on church street
while I stood naked in the back yard
gazing at a clotted mass of stars
and counting meteors
burning through the atmosphere
the sound of god
a sight of god
it’s all as spiritual
as ever I could imagine
and it isn’t even midnight
eleven fifty-six as I am writing
I was on my way to bed
caught upon the paradox
of a kind of silence
while at the same time
overhearing snippets from parties
all around
the year is finally closing
funny sometimes
how the now
always suggests forever without change
yet we are altered
into brand new different someones
you and I
in the three hundred and sixty five days
just gone
happy new person
happy new year
