puppet pipes and flute and me and the dog
while you rehearse with penny whistle
the dog begins to whine
then to howl
accompaniment and song
at some level
everything we do is a performance
the dragon and the gnome
all of your characters
are in the cabinet now
pensioned off behind glass
puppetry was a stage you trod
in front of little children
but now you drum
and whistle
now you uke-lay
piano phrases
and overdubbed harmonies in the front room
between traffic sounds
off the street
the dog and me are players
who sing along
under the approving eyes
of puppet boys and girls
and why not
the show is for all of us
this time
sometimes I think the whistle
sounds like pipes
perhaps a flute
