I'm not exactly sure why this is, but my eleven year old domestic shorthair, Michael, loves to sleep not only on my head, but also as close to my ear as possible. He has a very loud purr and while this may be distracting to some people, it's very comforting to me.
I know he also likes to chew on my hair at night as well as lick my hands and cheek.
He's a very shy cat and maybe this gives him the security he needs--kind of like Linus' security blanket, I guess.
My two year old cat, Roxey, will also sleep near my head, if not on it.
My seven year old cat, Riley, on the other hand, likes to sleep at my feet and rarely likes to be near my head at night, but that's all right because with Michael and Roxey, that's quite enough.
