Imagine this situation in a University. If you happened to be the Senior and your sister has entered University, You are in the group of students who wants to have fun at your sister, They want her to demonstrate how she would spend her first night with her husband. How would you feel it?.Will you stay with the crowd and watch the fun or walk away because she is your sister, So please make sure to treat those students whom you are ragging as you own sister or brother. Once you have that feeling you will never have a sadistic thoughts. Recently in a Colombo University a senior student who was against ragging was killed infront of the University academic staff. In this case a Leftist political party was involved as the student union wanted to show its political strength. Politics. Fun, Personal Vendetta, Jealousy,Superiority complex, racial hatred are some of the factors that stimulates ragging. Monthly Internet Magaizine (www;Kuviyam.com) has "Ragging in Educational" Institution as its theme for its December issue. You may read about it on 15th Dec 2002.
The approach is different in UK universities. The seniors meet the freshers at the station and take them to their hostel and help them in many ways to settle down and come to know the University environment. Are we to assume that the younger generation in Asian countries are degrading the morality of their culture? Do the parents have anything to do with it?.
