Some people are of the opinion that mild forms of ragging are OK. This is the greatest blunder. Often these ragging sessions start in a perceived to be mild forms. Seniors believe he can command respect without giving the same respect to the juniors. At some stage they cross their limits, the juniors refuse to budge and it goes wild. Seniors should demand nothing against the will of juniors even it is a minor thing. Even introductions should be voluntary. Seniors should show the same courtesy to juniors as they show to their seniors. Any violation of this norm should be treated as an offence and such an offender should be liable for punishment. MY EXPERIENCES WITH RAGGING While I was studying my degree, the norm was give respect and take respectseniors never misbehaved with juniors. Then, I joined M Sc in a University in UP [a few years back] and I was staying in the hostel. Before that I never faced ragging or high-handed behavior of seniors. After I joined M Sc I was told that the normal sessions of ragging have been banned but sporadic incidents are going on. A few days after I joined, a senior [an MA History student] came to me and started talking provocatively as if he has a right to misbehave. I listened to him for a few minutes, and then I gave one powerful slap to that bastard. Then he immediately started growling and shouting and said he would be coming with all his classmates and other seniors, and would thrash me black and blue. He also asked me to make arrangements for a hospital where I should take treatment after getting thrashed. Then only I understood that if a junior slaps a senior it is treated as a big affront, which is taken very seriously by the seniors. Then I was thinking how to face the awaited trouble. There seemed to be no way out. Then one of the seniors was sympathetic to me. But he too did not want take the risk of attempting to rescue me and invite the anger of his peers. But being a gentleman, he met me after an hour when I was alone and gave me a hint how I can save myself from the impending danger. The senior who received slap from me had some bitter enemies in the adjacent hostel. Although it is a bit risky to take their help, that was the only option left, he suggested me. Then immediately I went and met one fellow from the rival gang of that senior [who received the slap from me]. Then those rival gang fellows were happy that I could slap their enemy and they sent a message to that fellow that I was their friend and if anything happened to me that senior would lose his hand or leg. Anyway, after that warning that senior [who received slap from me] did not attempt anything further. A few weeks after that, one more incident took place. Some of us juniors used to sleep in the mess hall during hot nights after dinner is closed. One night around 11 O clock I was lying on one of the mess tables. Three more juniors were studying near the other table. Then one senior [an MA student] opened his trousers zip, took out his dick and was showing it to other juniors. The general norm was such if a senior shows his dick to juniors, they should not raise any objections. But the moment I noticed that, I got up, went close to him, and gave one kick on that rascals dick hitting on the right spot. He was not strong enough to retaliate immediately. But he got angry and shouted at me to get out of the mess hall. For the next few days that senior was in dilemma whether to inform that incident to other seniors and get me beaten. But somehow he felt that publicising might cost his own prestige since he got kicked by a junior on his dick. So finally he preferred that that incident should not be known to many people and he did not try anything against me. But he was always angry with mewhenever he saw me in the mess hall, he used to ask me to get out. Again, after a few weeks while I was taking bath another senior [an M Com student] intruded into my bathroom. I was naked and he wanted see my private parts. Well, I was tough enough to bear that much. But I was also tough enough to make that bastard pay for that. After two days, when I was taking rest lying on my cot in my room, that bastard [M.Com student] pushed open my rooms door. He immediately opened his trousers' zip took out dick and balls and stood in the entrance. I put a passive face so that he may come closer. As soon as he was close enough, I gave one full-blooded kick on his dick and balls. My kick was so strong he has no scope to retaliate. He just put his hands over his private parts and sat down groaning with pain. He could not even walk comfortably for 4 more days. He too didnt want to leak out the matter as it would be an insult for him that a junior smashed his dick and balls. But the matter spread. And there were murmurs among all the seniors about me. And I was expecting an attack at anytime. Then I had to do something. There was no way out. Then I thought for a while and spread a rumor that I already murdered one senior while I was studying degree
and here too I may murder one or two and then escape to my place... and also that I was not interested in taking my M Sc degree. Somehow this trick played and they believed that I am capable of murdering seniors. I also had fairly good contacts with principal and vice-principal. So those bastards never again tried anything against me. Anyway luckily in spite of all that I could clear my M Sc with a I class Then I joined MBA in one of the university campuses in A.P. By the time we joined seniors had left for project work and there was no ragging. But my own classmates started ragging juniors next year. Though I could not directly oppose ragging, I encouraged our juniors to retaliate. One of my classmates finger got fractured when a junior attacked him. And my classmate had to go to the hospital, take an X-ray and then had his hand and finger bandaged for three weeks. I was all through lucky that I could defy the seniors and survive. But what is the fate of a common student who comes from an orthodox upbringing and delicate mind? It would be a disaster... he may even commit suicide. When we finished MBA we were still in the hostel to clear the final formalities. By then our immediate juniors reached final year. Then they want to rag a fresher. One final year student asked a fresher to strip and dance. That fresher stripped and danced for the time being. But that fresher had good contacts with the outsiders. By next day evening 10 outsiders came and beat the final year student black and blue. I gave full moral support to those outsiders. They beat that final year student so badly that he could not walk comfortably for about a week. But I heard that after that incident there was no ragging for another 2 years in the MBA hostels. RAGGING IS A DIRTY THING IN ANY FORM--WHETHER MILD OR SEVERE. LET US NOW DISCUSS SOME ASPECTS OF THIS RAGGING. What is Ragging: Ragging amounts to breaking the normal rules of courtesy and behaving in a discourteous manner by one group [the seniors] against others [the juniors]. Here give respect and take respect equation is missing. Here the norm practiced is take insult [from the seniors] but give respect to the seniors. There is nothing like mild ragging. Ragging itself is bad whether it is mild or strong. Often it starts in a mild manner and goes physical. It is a totally wrong concept to think that ragging makes juniors tough and interactive. If juniors want to get tough, let them get it at their and their parents own free will and ways. Senior bastards have no right to decide things for juniors. Are these senior bastards paying for the juniors education? TO END RAGGING THE FOLLOWING PRINCIPLES AND NORMS SHOULD BE FOLLOWED 1. A senior or junior, should give respect and take respect. 2. A senior should not think he is superior to junior. Seniority of a student does not carry any value as he is not a boss to the junior with any defined authority. 3. No senior should force a junior to do anything against his free will. 4. If senior wants to know something from a junior he should request using polite addressing norms such as Can I know
, Can you please
, etc., the same way he expects to be addressed by the juniors and the same he addresses his seniors. If the junior is not willing to reveal, talk or do something, then there should not be any more force or threat. The seniors should shut up their mouths. 5. If the seniors want introduction from juniors they should politely request as they request anywhere outside. And if the junior refuses, seniors should mind their business. 6. A junior might feel that it is better to interact with and introduce himself to pigs rather than to the unwholesome seniors, then let him feel so. No one should force him as long as he does not openly call seniors pigs. 7. If the seniors want to help juniors they can always do that through pleasant means. But, there is no need for the seniors to misbehave. If there is something juniors to learn from seniors, then let juniors decide it for themselves. It is not the duty of the rouge-seniors to decide that. If the seniors are so much concerned, let those gentleman seniors, who can give equal respect to the juniors, come forward and teach them in a friendly manner. ---------------------------- E J J Hitler
