CURE Home Page
Posted by Dr.Kushal Banerjee The incident you mentioned is really a shocking one. These types of horrifying tales are rampant, and even sexual ragging has now become rampant. CURE is trying hard to do whatever possible for it to pave the way to uproot ragging. But this is a hard struggle. CURE needs every single person, who is against ragging, to join hands and actively participate in Anti Ragging activities, as much as possible for him/her. CURE is also concentrating on ground level activities against ragging, including its Medi-cells and Legal-cells for free asssistance to victims. Awaereness drives are also there among other things. We shall be really glad to have you with us in our struggle against ragging, Eagerly waiting to hear from you,

Hi Sandeep,
I am really sorry for commenting so late. Though I'm with CURE for quite some time (of-course I joined CURE much later than you had posted this message), I had not checked this message board ever before, rather I have been using the Yahoo groups and email. Presently I am a senior member of CURE and Coordinator of its West Bengal Chapter.
Kushal.

: Dear Members,
: I am a researcher based in the US and over
: phone today, my brother who is studying in
: an Engineering College Bangalore was
: narrating to me a horrendous ragging
: incident one of his friends went through in
: the hostel.
: Apparently, there was some fight between
: freshers and seniors over lewd exchanges of
: text messages. Some 30-40 seniors gathered
: in a room and beat up 3 freshers very badly.
: One student was seriously hurt. He bleed
: from his eyes and ears. The wardenn had
: mysteriously disappered from the hostel that
: night. The freshers could not do much that
: night as exams were going on and the next
: day they took the student to Manipal
: Hospital, Bangalore. The students pooled in
: some Rs. 8 grand, but the doctors refused to
: treat the patient in the absence of an FIR,
: since it was a ragging case. The doctors
: told them that the student's ear drum has
: been ruptured and damaged permanently. He
: would need a surgery soon.
: In the meantime, the warden and principal
: displayed shocking callousness by not just
: attending to the case immediately, but
: refusing to go to the hospital when the
: students informed them of the developments.
: The parents of all the three concerned kids
: are based in north India. They kids are too
: afraid to inform their parents, let alone
: file a FIR.
:
: Here is my opinion: 1. ANY kind of quarrel
: in the college does not justify beating up a
: student and permanently damaging him
: physically.
:
: 2. It was the immediate responsibility of
: the warden and the principal to make sure
: that immediate medical attention was paid.
: The Administrative Officer evaded the
: question when I tried to ask him for an
: explanation. He said they will be
: "looking into the matter".
:
: 3. It was the responsibility of the
: principal to lodge a FIR, since this was a
: criminal physical abuse.
:
: 4. Any complicity of the hostel officials in
: this incident needs to be investigated. On
: the whole, there is need for thorough
: investigation in this case.
:
: 5. Freshers fall in the age-group of 17-19
: years, and one cannot expect them file an
: FIR and lodge complaint. It is parents that
: need to move forward with action.
:
: However, here are some difficulties: 1. As I
: am trying to get the parents to take this
: issue up, nobody wants to get involved too
: much because they are afraid of a reprisal
: that would harm their children. This is very
: understandable.
:
: 2. I would prefer a non-legal route of
: settlement, as I want to avoid endless
: Police harrassment in the case of an
: investigation. The college should suspend
: the complicit official if any and strict
: disciplinary action needs to be taken
: against the offender. The complete medical
: treatment and counselling need to be taken
: care of by the college. The college
: officials owe an apology to the students and
: parents of those affected. If the college
: officials fail to fulfil these demands, I am
: not sure to what extent legal pursuit be
: carried.
:
: I and a host of my friends are planning
: something ahead if the outcome of students
: meeting with the college is not favorable. I
: request you to share your experiences in
: similar or related cases and let me know of
: your opinion.
:
: Thanks,
: Sandeep
