Posted by Nina on 5/6/2002, 10:13 pm Toyotomi Hideyoshi (last name first) was born a peasant (his nickname was "saru", which means 'monkey'). He joined Oda Nobunaga's (last name first) army and quickly became his right hand. When Nobunaga was murdered in 1582, Hideyoshi took his place and completed Nobunaga's work of unifying the whole Japan in 1591. Relation with other troopers' ancestors: Date Masamune (1567 - 1636). : Date clan (who held most of the NorthEast Japan) was once an enemy to Hideyoshi, but finally agreed to obey Hideyoshi's control (July, 1590). Mouri Motonari (1497-1571): Mouri clan is the ruler (feudal lord) of the chuugoku area (Southwest Japan), was an alliance of Hideyoshi. Mouri clan were famous of navy. Sanada clan: Sanada clan originally chose Toyotomi Hideyoshi as the master. At the time when Toyotomi clan fought with Tokugawa clan (BC 1600), Sanada (Yukimura) chose to serve Toyotomi clan, while Sanada (Nobuyuki) chose to serve Tokugawa Ieyasu. Toyotomi clan lost the battle, but Tokugawa did not kill Yukimura. Sanada clan later served under Tokugawa clan. (By the way, I just found A big mistake that I've made (^^;). Hideyoshi's Last name should be Toyotomi, not 'Toyokimi'. as I posted out on the FAQ. I've corrected the FAQ board bio already.) 7/2/04 correction: "Oda Nobunaga" is the correct one (vs. Oda Nobunaka"). By the way, I'm not especially familiar with Japanese History, so please be aware that the information may not be 100% correct.

Episode #2, when Touma introduce himself, he said: "Hashiba Touma da. Taiko Kanpaku no nagare wo kumu mono da."
'Kanpaku' is a honorable form used in ancient time (such as Heian Period) to address Imperial Regent in the Royal court.
'Taiko' is the honorable form to address a retired 'Kanpaku' whose son inherited his position of 'Kanpaku'.
'Taiko Kanpaku' here, specifically means Toyotomi (Hashiba was his original last name) Hideyoshi. Hideyoshi was the person who united Japan right before Tokukawa, and has been in the position of 'Taiko Kanpaku'.
'nagare', literally means 'stream' 'kumu' means 'to unit', 'mono' means 'person' here. 'da' is a verb, similar to 'is/am/are'.
The sentence means that A part of Touma Hashiba's blood comes from 'Toyotomi Hideyoshi'. That is, Touma is a descendent of Toyotomi Hideyoshi (not necessary, a direct descendent, however.)
Hideyoshi's captial was in Osaka, Japan. He is said to love gold (for example, his tea house was said to be built in gold) and woman...well (*sweatdrop*)
At the time of "Sengoku (war) period", all Daimyou (feudal lords/warlords) were ambitious to unify the whole Japan. That is, they were pretty much enemy/rival to one another at the time (although they may form alliance with one another as well). Therefore, their "Alliance" or "enemy" changed depended on the situation.
The final battle of Hideyoshi before he united Japan was against Hojo clan at Odawara (August, 1590). Hojo clan and Date clan were once alliance, and Hojo was said to lost the battle largely because Date clan chose not to help...
However, When Tokugawa Ieyasu fought against Toyotomi clan (AD 1600, Hideyoshi died already), Date Masamune chose Tokugawa clan (that is, Date clan once again became an enemy of Toyotomi clan). How confusing (^^;)
(There are multiple theories about what was happening at the time, i.e, why Date join one side but not the other. I wrote this information only based on the fact that Date clan fought along Tokugawa in Sekigahara. Another piece of information is that Date Masamune's daughter was engaged to Tokugawa's son at the time. Whatever Masamune was thinking about, his siding with Tokugawa was a fact.)
Mouri Motonari (who was elder than Hideyoshi) was an alliance of Oda Nobunaka (master of Toyotomi Hideyoshi). However, at the time of Oda Nobunaka's assassination (AD 1582, Motonari died already), Hideyoshi was fighting against Mouri. When Hideyoshi heard about Nobunaka's death, he made peace with Mouri, and eversince, Mouri clan were Hideyoshi's alliance.
