Posted by Nina on 5/13/2001, 8:19 pm The first OAV, "Gaiden", is literally a side story. It is said to be a service from Sunrise to the fans of YST. That's why it focused on the everyday life of the troopers. It's interesting, but it's not important. You don't need to watch OAV Gaiden to understand the world of YST. And there is no follow-up of the incident's impact on the troopers' personalities. For example, what happened to Seiji afterward? He is not a person who can say 'well, my armor did kill human beings, but it's not my fault, so let's forget it' and walk away... If YST is just a animation about The ideal world that Good is Good, and Evil is Evil, and Good always win over Evil....It won't attract me. OAV "Kikoutei Densetsu" was created to provide some more explnation on what Kikoutei is, because there is not enough info about this topic in the TV series (well, I know that people become even more confused after watching Kikoutei Densetsu...(^^;), but that's why Sunrise said it's created.) And OAV "Message" explained more about the 'armor's world'. What Kikoutei and other armors (i.e. power) are, and what the samurai troopers' roles are...what the human beings' roles are (ie. Nasty and Jun). It's why this OVA is called "Message". Every trooper in each episode try to answer the Message brought by Suzunagi in their own ways. What is the armor, what is power, what is samurai troopers, do human beings have the right to use power in the way they like, etc. There are lots of Japanese fans who cannot understand Message (Believe me, it's not an issue of translation only (^^;)). It's hard to understand because the basic theme Message tries to express is not an easy one to describe at all. And everytime I watch it, I have some more understanding of its theme than the last time I watched it. If you watch the OAV to entertain yourself. Forget "Message". It's not entertaining. And despite the fact that it's commercially made, it's not made in order to entertaining the audience as well. The director of YST (Mr. Iketa, also the director of YST's TV series season I) (and the staffs) tried to use "Message" to express all the things they tried to describe in the whole YST universe (more or less a self-satisfactory act).
Note: The following are my Personal interpertation.
White Kikoutei is not Good, and Black Kikoutei is not Evil. Shin found out this first (actually, Byakuen is the first one to recognize that "Mukara is the bearer of Kikoutei as Ryo is, and hence refused to attack Mukara. (from official magazine "Kikoutei Densetsu")), so he refused to fight at volume #1 because he did not feel that the black armor is evil (and that he did not feel the trooper's armor is good). There was no righteous reason for fighting in Kikoutei Densetsu as in TV series (which is to save the world). The armors fight each other only for the sake of "fighting" itself...
