A "circle" consists of one or more person who create doujinshi. For example, "Clamp" is the circle name of the the group "Clamp" (vs. individual pen names). A doujinshi could be good or bad, boring or interesting, thick or thin depends on the author(s). There are countless Doujinshi markets held in Japan every year. The biggest two are Natsu Komike (Summer Comic Market) and Fuyu Komike (Winter Comic Market) in Tokyo.

Doujinshi is the Japanese name for self-published books(non-commercial). It could be original or secondary creations (e.g. based on animation, comic books, games, bands, etc.) It could be manga or fanfictions (=novels).
