I just read the Animerica ariticle.
Unfortunately, Animerica is not always correct.
I don't have time to pinpoint all the errors, (& some of them are just different opinions regarding Japanese culture) but let me just point out that the place Touma was floating, has nothing to do (at least nothing officially) to do with "Kyushu or the historic city of Kumamoto and its magnificent black castle."
When Ryo saved Touma, they fell on the earth at "Hachiouji", which is a part of Tokyo Metropolitan, in Honshu, of course.
