It's true that all troopers have complicated family situations. However, in general, all troopers' family members get along with each other relatively well. Shuu's family are probably the ideal "normal" family (out of the five families). Shin's family members care about each other very much (according to official novel). Ryo's family (which only has two members, Ryo's father and himself) are also a loving family, despite the absence of the father (per cassette book). Touma's family, although with the divorce, all members continues to communicate with each other. Touma's father tends to forget about this as he's a workholic, but this is not because he doesn't care about the other family members (per CD drama 'Tenkuden' and official novel). Seiji's family maybe the most difficult one to interpret. However, at least there wasn't any extreme conflict within the family, according to the official novel.
It is ture that Touma purposefully studies Ancient History and Tactics in rebellion of his father. However, "rebellion" is probably too strong a word to used here. At least in the official novel, when Touma's father discussed about his research (which regards about how people can fly using scientific technology), with him, and Touma expressed basic understandinng. It appeared that: In stead of not liking (or hating) his father's study, Touma chooses not to study in the same area because he's merely tired of the same topic. (In the sense that you would want to eat something spicy after you ate many sweets).
Unfortunately, the official novels do not have any English translations (and I won't have time to do it as well). In fanfic world, Touma's future job varies from physical engineering/computer science to historian/anthropology. In OVA "Kikoutei densetsu", Touma created a handheld translator to be used in Africa (Nasti had it in her hand). This showed that Touma is indeed also good at programming and other scientific technology, despite his love for history.
>Would Seiji's grandfather have tension (in the Date home) or argument with Seiji's father for choosing martial arts over kendo (as a means to live)?
Seiji's father did not choose martial arts over Kendo. (The ones who study Martial arts are Shuu's family) According to "YST encyclepedia", Seiji's father does practice Kendo. However, he does not choose it for a living but rather works as a police officer. Seiji's grandfather, as you said, does not like such choice. That's why overall, in fanfic word, it is overwhelming agreed that Seiji, rahter than his father, would be the person who inherits the family Kendo doujo in the future. Seiji's mother, the biological daughter of the grandfather, was described to be a "very strong" (i.e., powerful) person. (CD drama "tsuki", Shuu mentioned that "Women are stronger in Seiji's family"). As she is the one who decided to marry Seiji's father, most likely she would be able to defend her husband over her father's complaints, and hence avoided major conflicts.
>Does Ryo suffer because of his father's unwillingness to lead the Sanada clan?
Apparently Ryo does not really know the details of his own family history nor the family responsiblity. There wasn't a lot official information available. However, it appeared that Ryo has little or no other family cotacts. It's not clear how big "Sanada clan" currently is. Ryo and his father maybe the only direct descedents...(the "clan" often include other non-direct members, such as marry-in family members, etc.)
BTW, be cautious that the above comments are merely how I interpret the official infomation. Other fans may have different views from the same info.
