He started working on it in 1867. The epitaph from Pindar is contained in Nietzsche's Latin version of De Laertii Diogenis fontibus. Both the German and the Latin versions are in: Frühe Schriften [cited as BAW], Volume IV, pp. 217-359. The German version is in the Colli-Montinari edition of Nietzsche's works, 2/1, 75ff. The essay was published in two parts: the first on September 25, 1868, in Rheinisches Museum für Philologie, Vol. XXIII, pp. 632-653; the second on March 18, 1869, in Rheinisches Museum für Philologie, Vol. XXIV, pp. 181-228.
