What if this consumption in flame, being turned to stone, and devastated by the truth lead these unfortunate souls to act beyond their own pitiful scope of influence: pushing them to action they otherwise would lack the courage to pursue...terrible truths inspiring terrorist deeds; they might say to themselves: "I am shit like everything else...why not bring it all down into the sewer of my loathesome lot...tear it down, burn it down, flush it all away... .. ." Can we bear such truths in the hands of such souls?

There may be a few who catch a glimpse of the truth of who they are and said glimpse is like kerosene to fire: a ravaging experience that turns one to ash. Maybe something similar was meant when the Ancient Greeks told tales about Medusa and her Gorgon glare? Maybe Nietzsche's eternal recurrence of the same is meant to have the same effect, at least for the few for whom the truth is devastating. And, maybe they aren't so few?

: I'm not sure who's been telling you to stay
: true to yourself, but Nietzsche understands
: the source of your need to deceive yourself.
: It originates in what he calls the
: "basic will of the spirit" (BGE
: 230), which prefers comforting falsehoods to
: hard truths. Philosophy requires a degree
: of cruelty against oneself that is beyond
: the capacity of most people. Should
: philosophers therefore respect the
: "right" of people like you to
: self-deception? In Nietzsche's view, it all
: depends on the consequences that flow from
: the lies you believe, in particular what
: they mean for the overall flourishing and
: advancement of the human species (BGE 4).
: In an age of religious zealots who aim to
: destroy the gains of modern civilization, we
: may no longer be able to afford the luxury
: of indulging certain people in their alleged
: "right" to self-deception.
