It seems to me that the heroic attitude towards death and life that Nietzsche is calling for could be an echo of the Greco-Roman one, where life after death in the Hades was quite unappealing, and one strove more to be remembered for great deeds by one's community. Christianity changed that by promising a fantastic individual afterlife. Now that God is dead, I think that Nietzsche is reviving the ancient ideal in a new form.
